Normally something small and reliable. Aren’t newer cars normally cheaper to insure?

the best thing you can do is shop around… here’s how:
There are 2 types of insurance companies ; direct and broker, and to get the best results you should search both types.
Call several direct companies such as: allstate, statefarm, td insurance, belair direct.
Search online or through some yellow pages for several brokers/brokerages that will shop many broker companies on your behalf- this is very important because a broker can and will check prices from 5-10 companies that might insure you and contact several high risk specialty insurers.
Good luck,

A taxi, because you don’t pay the insurance.
Seriously though, it is not as simple as you are asking. It depends on what the insurance companies have set out in their facts and statistical data for the specific area in which you live. They are thus your best source for that information and the answer you seek may well not be here. At your age, it is common to be placed in a high risk category due to age and low experience level. It could be a shock for you to see the rates. About 20 years ago in a major Canadian city I paid about $4000/year for a 10 year old car that had a small 4cyl engine and a value of far less than the insurance cost. That was with a good riving record at that time, although young as well.

A cheap car, don’t insure the car. If you finance you will have to cover the car. Protects the bank or loan office. Basic liability as required by state law, conservative states are oppressive and most expensive. In liberal states no liability insurance. Cover your own ass.Definitely get PIP personal Injury protection for you and any one in your car. Start with your parents or grand parents insurance agent. Multiple insurance plans get discounts. BTW if you have good grades, and no discipline problems at school that will get discounts from some insurance companies. Get your drivers license and don’t drive the longer you go with out a ticket or accident the less you will pay for insurance.

a car with a small engine
No sport cars, you know like a golf GTI because they’re more expensive.
I’ve hear 5 door cars are cheaper than 3 as the three are considered sporty.
Older cars are bit cheaper as well.
It will also bring your insurance down a bit if you do a course after passing your test like the passplus.
